The Bores of Summer

I’m not entirely sure, but I would say that I am about halfway through summer, and what have I done? Not a lot.

For the first few weeks I enjoyed having an entire side of the house to myself, but that came to an end when Steve moved back home. I am now back in my little room (with more stuff in it than ever). It’s ok.. I have always been one to “take one for the team”. More or less, the worst part is the lack of silence and solitude. I am fine with it for the most part, but I can’t retreat very easily — particularly because my room has poor ventilation if I close the door and I have two heaters (computers) running all of the time.

About three weeks ago I purchased a new bike for my riding and exercising (and money-saving) enjoyment. Like most purchases I make, it was discouraged by my parents as being frivolous, but I enjoy it, and have already thoroughly broke it in. My friend Rob used to bike all the time and sees my new-(re)found hobby of bike riding as an excuse to do it again. I can’t say I have broke even on the cost of it yet, but I will be keeping track so that I can rub it in. If I am measuring in purely gas-saved terms, it will be a while. I have done the math, and I save about $0.32 on each trip to campus, so that’s something. And besides, I need to get some exercise anyways.

Last week was the start of marching band rehearsals at Ben Davis High School. Yet again, I am working with the drumline and being a tech-guru for the band. The show this year is themed on “The Raven”. The only dissapointment the show has caused me is that there will be spoken word — I hate spoken word. I am assured that it will not be tacky, but that’s purely impossible to do. Perhaps. Despite my grief about it, spoken word means my job as the sound-man is evermore crucial. After the few mistakes last year, I am glad they have not shyed away from depending on it (and me).

Though it may be summer, I have on-going academic stuff to do. For my teaching assistantship, I have been working on a game called “Quadrature” for the artificial intelligence course at Rose-Hulman. Also, I have been reading through scientific papers in search of workable (and useful) ideas for a thesis. And finally, I will be taking the GRE this coming weekend.
